2017 was a breakout year for the LGBTQ+ community. FairyTales celebrated their 19th annual Film Festival, and Canada sought restitution for LGBT victims who faced government-authorized discrimination.

1. Australia Makes Same-Sex Marriage Legal

Australia’s Parliament voted in favour of same-sex marriage. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stated, “This is Australia: fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect.”

2. Queer Film, TV, and Music

“Moonlight” won best picture at the Academy Awards, Transgender actress Daniela Vega starred in “A Fantastic Woman,” “Will & Grace” returned to prime time TV, popular television shows feature gay, lesbian, and trans characters, and queer music artists topped the charts!

3. Queer Election Year

The United States saw significant victories. Most notably: Palm Springs all-LGBT City Council, Jenny Durkan became the first openly lesbian mayor of Seattle, Danica Roem became the first and only transgender legislator in the US, and Andrea Jenkins became the first trans person to win a City Council seat in Minneapolis!

4. Alberta Strengthens Gay-Straight Alliance Bill

Bill 24 was passed; it closes loopholes that deny or delay students who attempt to set up peer support groups. The bill also increases privacy: school officials cannot tell parents if their child is in a gay-straight alliance group, except for special circumstances.

5. Canada Stands Up For International LGBTQ+ Rights

Canada resettled nearly 30 victims of the anti-gay purge in Chechnya. Rainbow Railroad provided a safe passage for men who were in imminent danger.
